When should you trim hedges?
Generally speaking for Deciduous hedges the best time of year to trim them is in late Winter, before the hedges start to bud. This is the time of year when the hedge or shrub is most dormant and will also help to promote growth through Spring and Summer. It also depends on the species as some species can be trimmed a lot more than others and will benefit from a lighter trimming during summer. If you want to maintain a certain aesthetics to your hedges then a light trim during summer will be the best time to do this.
Evergreen Hedges should be trimmed during summer or early spring to target new growth. For heavier pruning it is best to cut them back during winter as the new growth during spring will cover the cuts. For new shrubs it is best to prune them during Spring for the first 2 years.
